Frogen R417A
General Information
Heat pumps are efficient units for providing heating and cooling in both residential and commercial buildings. R22, however, is still being widely used in most heat pumps produced in the United States, which has been scheduled to phase-out. At present, the majority alternatives of R22 consist of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants only. Unfortunately, these HFC replacements require synthetic oil and expensive modification. Recently, R417a, a new alternative of R22, is presented and does not require synthetic oil because R417a contains 3.4 wt% of R600 (butane). R600 is an excellent oil carrier. The emphasis of this paper is an attempt to document the findings of thermodynamic cycle, heat transfer, and experimental study on R417a serving as a drop-in working fluid in a two-ton split heat pump system.
R417A refrigerant is an HFC mixture that serves as a substitute for R22. It is compatible with traditional lubricants. In most cases, the lubricant type does not need to be changed in the event of retrofitting.
R417A REFRIGERANT APPLICATIONS AND USE
R417a has physical properties fairly similar to R22 refrigerant. It is best suited to replacing R22 in small (< 15 kW) fixed air conditioning systems. R417A does not require synthetic oil because it contains 3.4 wt% of R600 (butane). R600 is an excellent oil carrier. This advantage makes R417a ideal for serving as a true drop-in replacement in existing R22 equipment without any modification. It is also suitable for medium/high temperature commercial refrigeration systems and DX coolers, for example.
R417A has a lower discharge temperature and pressure than R22, which most likely extends the compressor’s service life. R417A has also been found to yield energy savings in certain systems.
